PRODUCER: SRAVANTHI RAVIKISHORE
DIRECTOR: RA VENKAT
Set in a village near Madurai, Kida revolves around three central characters – a grandfather, his grandson and a goat named Karuppan. The boy and Karuppan share a great bond.
The story happens in a day’s time. With the whole village eagerly awaiting the arrival of Diwali the next day, an aged and poor grandfather played by Poo Ramu promises his little grandson that he would get new set of good clothes for him for Diwali. However, he fails to raise money needed to buy new clothes despite making frantic attempts throughout the day. Later in the evening, he decides sell the goat to a meat shop fellow (Kaali Venkat) and buy new attires and hopes to bring smiles on his grandson’s face. However, in a turn of events the goat goes missing the same night and whether the trio – Ramu, the boy and Kaali Venkat finds the goat before the dawn and boy wears new clothes for the festival forms the crux narrated in a nail biting interesting manner. There’s an intricate love story as well.
The director has extracted the best from all the actors and even captured right expressions from the black goat, uncomplicated beautiful screenplay, brilliant cinematography, the humanitarian approach and the riveting ending makes it a wonderful watch.
SECOND BEST FILM: KASADA THAPARA
PRODUCER: VENKAT PRABU
DIRECTOR: CHIMBU DEVAN
Chimbu Devan’s Kasada Tabara is a well crafted hyperlink anthology film, where multiple stories with various characters happening at different places, which get connected in some of the most unlikely places, because of the butterfly effect and vantage point theory.
The major success of the movie is Chimbudevan’s perfect casting including a small role of the local village doctor played beautifully by veteran Sangili Murugan and extracting the best out of them.
Chimbu’s characters are somewhat raw and real. The screenplay flows along well and on the whole a well-crafted enjoyable anthology.
SPECIAL JURY AWARD: IRAVIN NIZHAL – R. PARTHIBAN
Iravin Nizhal is a new attempt in Indian cinema and as the captain of the ship, Prathiban’s immense effort in all aspects of the filmmaking in all departments – extracting the best from all artistes, technically – be it music, camera and art direction, the film stood out and a remarkable achievement.
BEST ACTOR IN A LEAD ROLE: SHARED BY TWO ACTORS

Vijay Sethupathi is perhaps the only star who is daring enough to back such scripts in Tamil cinema. There’s no mass intro or punch lines…neither flashy songs … It is a journey of a simple man who wants to provide better life to his family and keeps them happy and the emotional chaos he goes through.
Vijay Sethupathi nails the lead character Radhakrishnan with his natural feat.
Poo Ramu – lived the role of an underprivileged grandfather, who is desperate to buy a set of news clothes to his little grandson.
BEST ACTRESS IN A LEAD ROLE : SAI PALLAVI – FOR THE FILM GARGI
Gargi is not a mere courtroom drama, but more of Gargi’s story. And Gautham Ramachandran has befittingly chosen Sai Pallavi for the titular role, which had several shades to portray. It is her show all the way and Sai Pallavi pulls off a spectacular performance.

Arthur Wilson’s camera works in Iravin Nizhal that leaves you awestruck. Imagine him carrying the camera on his shoulders and capturing the entire film in a single shot without a break.

The main challenge was editing the stories without any confusion, which Prem Kumar has accomplished superbly.
