Ramesh Yanthra is a visual artist and filmmaker. He was born and raised on his family’s farmland in Salem, South India. He completed his schooling in and around villages and has very little interaction with his village people as his farmland is away from the village. So, he used to spend time in the farmland after school hours. However, he was keenly interested in drawing and painting from childhood which led him to join the Fine Arts Institute in the state capital Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He experienced several cultural impacts as he came from remote farmland to urban. However, he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1993 and he is the first graduate from his farmer’s family. He got a national research grant from Lalikala Akademy in 1995. Later he completed his Master’s in Fine Arts and then started his career as an Assistant art director in the Tamil film industry and then became an Art Director for a few films. In between, he migrated to the design field became a user experience analyst and worked for several multinational companies.
He also went to Reunion Island and worked as an Art director for the Diwali festival of Indian origin people which celebrate this cultural festival every year. Again he went back to the film industry and started his first documentary “Gudiyam Caves” which was selected at Short Film Corner at Cannes Film Festival in 2015. His concepts and projects stem from various assorted sources and cultures, which led him to create time-based work and investigate a vast range of themes within the area of history, ethnography study, and social & cultural developments. So far he has directed three documentaries and one short biopic film. Currently, he is working on a feature film and two documentaries.
