An enigmatic cartel leader, Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, later hires her to assist in transitioning to live as Emilia Pérez. Following a secretive journey for surgery, Emilia fakes her death and begins anew. Reuniting with her family under false pretenses sparks tensions, leading to betrayal and a tragic car crash involving Emilia, her ex-wife Jessi, and Jessi’s lover Gustavo. Emilia’s nonprofit legacy inspires a movement for justice, while Rita takes guardianship of Jessi’s children, seeking redemption.

Jacques Audiard comes from a film-oriented family. His father, Michel Audiard, was a celebrated screenwriter and director. He works on the projects like Roman Polanski’s The Tenant (1976). Transitioning to screenwriting in the 1980s, his successful thrillers are Mortelle Randonnee (1983) and Grosse fatigue (1994). Audiard’s directorial debut, Regarde les hommes tomber (1994), earned three César Awards, Known for acclaimed films like Sur mes lèvres (2001) and De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté (2005), Audiard is recognized as a modern master of the French thriller, following in the footsteps of Jean-Pierre Melville and Henri-Georges Clouzot.
