In Above the Dust, a ten-year-old boy in rural China dreams of owning a water pistol, a desire that intertwines with his grandfather’s whimsical promise to fulfil Whatit as a ghost after his death. When the grandfather passes away, the boy embarks on a poignant, surreal journey, chasing his dream through a haze of imagination and grief. Xiaoshuai Wang, a celebrated filmmaker was a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy. A pioneer of the Sixth Generation directors, his debut The Days (1993) gained international recognition and was named one of the BBC’s top 100 films. His works, including Beijing Bicycle (2001) and Shanghai Dreams (2005), portray ordinary Chinese lives amid social upheaval. With accolades like the Berlinale Silver Bear and Cannes Grand Jury Prize, his films (In Love We Trust, Red Amnesia, So Long, My Son) explore the enduring impacts of China’s past.
